The Washington Post ran a rather long article today that the righty bloggers are just giddy with joy over. The gist of it is that they profiled Maryscott O’Connor, of the My Left Wing blog, who likes to sounds like she has tourette’s in describing Bush. I’ve read it a couple of times and I’m still not sure why the Washington Post gave this article any space, other than being another case of the “liberal media” being, well, not. The right wingers love it though, commenting with a smug superiority and quite enjoying their “Aha! See, I knew those lying loser hate filled scumbags just sat around calling us lying loser hate filled scumbags!” moment. Nothing quite like a self fulfilling characterization.
I was going to have some fun linking to some venomous hate filled right wing blogs to further illustrate the point, but I decided against giving them the linkage and traffic. Besides, doing so would make me no better than David Finkel, who wrote the WaPo article. (Although, I can’t resist reminding everyone that Dick Cheney once told a US Senator “Go fuck yourself” on the floor of the Senate. So much for the right wing maintaining a high level of debate.)
See, here’s the thing that the right wing blogs in ecstacy don’t seem to get. The article wasn’t an attack on liberal bloggers, it was an attack on bloggers. It wasn’t going after “The Angry Left”, he was attacking the blogosphere. This is the old school media saying “Look! These bloggers are just nutjobs in bathrobes! Who could ever take them seriously?” By joining the chorus and villifying Maryscott, they’re only helping to prop up the real purpose of this peice: to marginalize and discredit the blogosphere.
