Democrats have their 8th Candidate for the Senate. They need to win six of them (and hold on to all the current seats) to gain control of the Senate in November. Here’s where things get interesting - these will be some very closely watched races. The Democrats have some strong candidates and I think they (finally) have their act together under Howard Dean’s leadership.
The only question mark with regards to candidates at this juncture seems to be the fate of Joe Lieberman, who’s being challenged in the Democratic primary by Ned Lamont - Lieberman says he’ll run as an independent if Lamont wins. Lamont is being backed by Daily Kos, on account of Liberman being a Republican in all but name and (justifiably) earning the ire of progressives. While I agree with the spirit of what they’re doing, I think spending time, energy, and resources on this in a critical election year, dividing the base and putting the seat at risk for Democrats borderlines on sheer idiocy. All I can say is I hope it pays off for progressives in the end, though I have my doubts.
I don’t have much else to say on these races yet, it’s still early and too much can happen. It’ll definitely be interesting to keep an eye on as election day draws closer though.
