The post title, of course, comes courtesy of Tricky Dick himself, but it may as well have come from Bush’s mouth.
President Bush has quietly claimed the authority to disobey more than 750 laws enacted since he took office, asserting that he has the power to set aside any statute passed by Congress when it conflicts with his interpretation of the Constitution.
Frankly the logic behind the quote doesn’t hold up any better for Bush than it did Nixon, and Bush is every bit the criminal his spiritual predecessor was.
My reaction to this story though is something like “Bush broke the law again? Must be monday.” At 750, it works out to be a law broken every 2-3 days of his Presidency… an amazing feat considering that he’s taken more time off than any President in history. Bush’s criminal behavior is so well chronicled (and I’ve talked about it so much) that it feels like there’s hardly anything left to say about it, other than it’s time to impeach the bastard.
Which leads me to the other observation I make here… the number has to get to 750 before the professional media starts to talk about it? Where were they when it hit 500? Where the heck were they when the President broke the law the first time?
