From an article by Carl Bernstein on TruthOut:
There are huge differences between the Nixon presidency and this one, of course, but surprisingly few would appear to redound to this administration’s benefit, including even the fundamental question of the competence of the president.
That’s the standout line from an an excellent article drawing out the comparison between the modus operandi of the two Presidents. They’re shockingly, frighteningly similar, except that Bush appears to be worse in most every regard (although this is something that some of us have been saying for years). He also discusses the case for impeachment and the political climate thereof.
Impeachment proceedings against a President when his own party controlled the Congress would be nothing short of historic, but I think that recently the odds of it have shifted from “impossible” to “improbable”. Potentially, this could be the issue that shapes the midterm elections in November, as Republicans find themselves between a rock and a hard place with regards to Bush. More Americans are becoming uneasy with this Administration and desiring accountability. I’m not putting high odds on it, but there’s been a palpable shift in the winds. We may be in the midst of history in the making.
Then again, that might just be my own wishful thinking.
